Setting Background: N/A

History: Here

Personality: Ray is is described by Peter Venkman as being the heart of the Ghostbusters. And it's a pretty accurate description. For starters, he's the only founding member that isn't a sarcasm machine like Venkman and he lacks Egon's tendency towards cold logic. He's the quickest to befriend Winston, if the fact that most of the scenes Winston was a part of include him, including Winston's training, means anything. He's the most optimistic member of team, still operating Ghostbusters as a birthday party entertainer when banned from paranormal investigation, believing the company could eventually come back even after 5 years, and only engaging in the occasional bit of cynicism, like with his "ungrateful little yuppie larvae" comment.

He holds an almost childlike enthusiasm for firepoles and anything even the slightest bit paranormal, even unexplained mass sponge migrations. While not the one who came up with the idea for Ghostbusters, was definitely the member most gung-ho about the enterprise. Where other people might be terrified, or at least grossed out by ghosts, Ray shows an almost enthusiastic glee when encountering them, unless he feels he's in actual mortal danger, seen on the team's first encounter with Slimer and the almost breathless "Wow!" that was his first reaction to Gozer's appearance.

Despite his belief in the paranormal, when it comes down to actual religion he's something of an agnostic. He doesn't deny the possibility of the existence of the Abrahamic God, but would like to have proof before saying one way or another. When asked by Winston if he believes in god his response was "Never met him." This wasn't always the case, as he shows a working knowledge of biblical folklore, as evidenced by his quoting of Revelations, and once went to seminary. That said though, he does believe in the concept of souls, mentioning that touching black slime could be harmful to both body and soul. This is in contrast to Egon, who's always comment that he sees ghosts as just the manifestation of leftover psychic energy.

Despite his occasionally childlike demeanor, he's a highly educated scientist, holding at least one doctorate, and likely more. He has an incredible wealth of knowledge of the occult, eventually owning an occult bookstore during the five year period Ghostbusters was effectively inactive, and is a notably skilled mechanical engineer and inventor, having built the proton packs and restored the Miller-Meteor that became the Ecto-1. He's known to be overly technical when speaking about either subject, though not quite to the same extent as Egon.

He's a fan of comics, cartoons, and roleplaying games, having played Ghosts and Gargoyles in seminary, keeps a doll of Stay-Puft at his bedside, and according to the comics set post-game routinely visits comic book conventions.

He's an absolutely terrible liar. People can read him like an open book when he does, Venkman especially, as seen when Ray was keeping the fact that Dana was asking for their help from him. There are moments where lying might be helpful where the idea of not being honest doesn't even occur to him. Specifically, when asked if he was a god by Gozer, Ray's response was no, leading to the Ghostbusters nearly being killed.

He shows a personal preference for using people's last names, or referring to them by nicknames. In fact, in the case of the Rookie, he never even refers to him by his real name, instead using a whole host of nicknames for him.

He's a genuinely nice and decent person, quick to help those who need it, like assisting Dana even after the ban from paranormal investigation. Very few things get him actually angry, except for hurting children, messing with his friends and family, endangering the city, or blowing up the containment unit. He chewed out Vigo for trying to possess Oscar Barrett, and was the first to insult Peck after the containment unit explosion. On the flipside, while he's quick to stick up for others, he's has a hard time sticking up for himself, sometimes to his detriment. This is best seen in the way Venkman pushes him into mortgaging his parent's house, and much later, when Venkman forces Ray, by yanking on his ears, to let him come along to Dana's apartment to investigate what happened to Oscar.

In the case of the Stay-Puft incident, he feels some guilt. He knows, logically, that if he hadn't thought of anything, Gozer would keep looking until someone chose, and that, as giant monsters go, a 100-foot tall marshmallow man wasn't the worst possible option. Especially since recent events have indicated that Gozer really doesn't like being stuck in that form and has attempted everything in it's power to alter it. Still, he feels guilty that he was the one who allowed Gozer to enter his universe, even if he couldn't really do anything about it.

Freebie Powers: N/A

Power Selection: Blessed Weapon

Game Powers: Blessed sword with the ability to cast the spell Turn Undead for a maximum of 10 minutes. When activated, the spell will cause any undead within 10 feet to flee from the sword's presence. This ability weakens depending on how many are in range. Hitting one to two with the spell will cause them to run from the battlefield entirely. Using it on three to five undead will cause all of them to run but be able to remain in the general area. Any more than five and they will only be required to stay outside the range of the spell until it's cancelled.

Non-Powered Abilities: Incredible knowledge of the occult, historical knowledge as it relates to the occult, skilled researcher, doctorate in mechanical engineering, doctorate in parapsychology, skilled driver, skilled mechanic, able to build devices capable of producing theoretical particles out of late 80s, early 90's era tech.

Setting/Suitability: He'll respond fairly well to the setting. He's got an extensive knowledge of the occult and magic to begin with, which makes him fairly useful when dealing with anything of that nature. Additionally, this isn't the first incident where he's been stuck in a pre-technological age, having once spent a decent period of time in the Arthurian ages serving as King Arthur's advisor.

Write your character reacting to the situation in whatever idiom is natural to them, whether it's with appealing to compassion, using logic, fighting their way out, terrifying them by playing death metal on their dying ipod, etc.

Network Sample: [Ray is uncharacteristically silent as he looks at his younger counterpart, who appears to be actively studying him and the mirror. The interest in the paranormal had always been there, even at that young age.]\

I'm not exactly sure what to say here. I'd like to think you and I are usually in tune, so there's not much that I think really needs to be said. Except to maybe lay off the junk food. Although that's probably a lost cause at this point.

[Child Ray is clearly not listening at this point, no matter what the the spirit who set this up told him to do. Instead, he's poking and prodding at the edges of his end of the mirror. Ray grins at his counterpart's curiosity.]

I think you've got the right idea there.

History: http://ghostbusters.wikia.com/wiki/Ray_Stantz
The Ghostbusters traveled to Iceland alongside RGB Egon and retrieved part of the Raouskinna. They then went to Chile to retrieve another part, while the Chicago team went to Japan to find the rest. Bringing the book back to New York, and attempted to hold it hostage to force Loftur to bring back Egon. During the confrontation, Jenny read a spell from the book. accidentally transporting the group to Hell. The resulting delivery of Loftur to Hell was enough to make sure Satan allowed them to leave. Following the path of Dante, they eventually made their way to Aibell, an Irish goddess's, lair. She brought back Egon, and forced Venkman to hand over the Raouskinna as part of a previous deal. Jenny destroyed the book after Venkman handed it over, and Aibell vaporized her in turn, and sent the Ghostbusters back to New York in a fit of anger.

Noticing Jenny was missing, and not having noticed she had been killed in the chaos of being sent back, Ray was in the middle of planning to return to Aibell's lair to retrieve her, only to be confronted by Jenny's ghost. Despite her status, Jenny was still willing to continue their nascent relationship, and Ray, being Ray, was all for it.

SAMPLES

Prose Sample:

Ray's not the mouth of the Ghostbusters. That would be Venkman's area of expertise. So when the Coluan decides start questing Ray's skills, he looks a little put on the spot. He rallies, though. It's not the first time anybody's questioned his abilities, or his sanity, and he doubts it will be the last.

"Look, no offense sir, but some of things I've dealt with over the past few years would probably turn you into a gibbering mess. I faced down an actual destructor god and still had the presence of mine to attempt to force it into a less threatening form," Ray says, a guilt expression crossing his face as he remembers what the exact outcome of that incident was. It was somewhat mollified by the fact that he knew Gozer wasn't a fan of it's current Destructor Form either.

"It didn't exactly go as planned, but my friends and I managed to defeat it. And I've seen much worse than that since. Look, if you're that worried about me being a Legionnaire, you can find someone to replace me. I'd hate to give up the chance to be an actual superhero, believe me, but not enough to cause you to lose peace of mind over it."

Of course, Ray knows that with the UP's current laws, the Coluan dignitary wouldn't be able to find anyone to replace him, even if he wanted to. The dignitary knows it too, as he gives Ray a glare, and walks off.

"Apparently he wasn't that worried after all."

Network Sample:

[The camera focuses in on an extremely excited Ray Stantz, who just looks happy to be here.]

An actual journey to an alternate dimension. Do you know how exciting this is? I mean, of course you do, you're me. Sure, this isn't the first time we've done this, but I think it's shaping up to be the longest trip yet. Make sure you're still taking notes, I don't want to go back to everyone else empty-handed.

Assuming we ever get back, of course. I'm not that worried about it, it's not like we've never faced anything like this before. Gods, demons. W even managed to escape an actual encounter with Satan himself. Admittedly, he let us go, and I'm not entirely sure we could have won that fight if we'd ended up having to defend ourselves against him, but it's still worth noting. The only difference between previous incidents and this one is the exponentially larger scale and power of the enemy. But hey, we have actual superheroes on our side this time. We're superheroes this time. Something we've always wanted to be since we were kids.

Anyways, I think we're running low on time here, so just keep up the good work, and if Venkman's shown up, make sure he's not taking too much advantage of the Legion's celebrity status. Tall order, I know, but I have faith you can do it.

Additional info: If it's alright, Ray is going to be carrying the traditional Proton Pack, rather than the upgrade one seen in the games. Mostly because, according to the comics, the upgraded pack has a tendency to malfunction. Additionally, he'll be carrying a ghost trap and a PKE Meter.
